Winter Gear Distribution for Community in Need
Several Rotary members from Wilmette and Evanston Lighthouse volunteered to be "personal shoppers" for community participants.  We helped individuals and families select coats, hats, gloves and scarves for keeping warm this winter. Connections for the Homeless organized this annual event, and our volunteer members find it a rewarding experience, as it helps those who are less fortunate to ensure they will be able to cope with our winter weather.

 Rotary Holiday Party- December 3
Our Holiday Party at The Lawn restaurant at the Wilmette Golf Club last Wednesday, was well attended and enjoyed by many members and their guests. The New Trier Swing Choir performed for us and they were amazing as in past years.  It was a great way to enter into a positive holiday spirit!

Community Conversation- "Meeting the Moment"
Several members attended a community conversation last week, where representatives from North Shore Neighbors and the Onward House in Chicago talked about the services available to immigrants and refugees through Onward House.  These services include food assistance, education, immigration and legal Matters, Medicaid Application (Medical Card), health and counseling.  They emphasized that due to the widespread fear in many households right now, they are delivering food to many families that are afraid to leave their homes. Food insecurity is becoming a bigger issue now as well. Website https://onwardhouse.org/

Many municipalities are passing ordinances regarding a civil response to federal immigration enforcement activities.  Wilmette will be having a Board of Trustees Meeting on November 12 at 7pm in Village Hall, to discuss this issue.

Composting and Climate Change
Composting and Climate Change

Mary Beth Schaye is a zero waste consultant and worked for Collective Resource Compost Cooperative, food scrap hauling cooperative based in Evanston, Illinois for 14 years. She continues this work after their recent merger with The Urban Canopy. Their Compost Club is one branch of this unique, Chicago-based business, which has 7 branches, all related to keeping food production and food waste management local and sustainable.

Mary Beth will give an overview about how diverting food scraps from landfills helps to mitigate climate change and explains how the container-swap commercial composting service her company provides helps both residential and commercial customers to be a part of the solution. Other related services of facilitating zero waste events and recycling of hard-to-recycle items are also covered.
