May 20 Program - Unsung Heroes of History
May 20 Program – Dick Farkas

Dick Farkas, is a Professor of  political science at DePaul University.  Dick has presented several times on topics ranging from political discourse to unsung heroes of history.  On May 20, he told us a fascinating story of  Morris (Moe) Berg who was a baseball player (a catcher), but also a spy during WWII.  Although not a great baseball player  and traded to many different teams, Moe was a remarkable man who spoke 15 languages and studied science. During WWII, Moe performed many missions including evaluating whether Nazi Germany was close to developing a nuclear bomb. Had he determined that Germany was indeed close, he was instructed to kill the scientist in charge and then kill himself.  He determined that Germany’s development was overstated and not imminent.

New Member - Olimpia Savarino
Our board unanimously approved the Membership Application from Olimpia Savarino as our newest member. Sponsored by Debora Morris, Olimpia is Assistant Branch Manager, AVP at North Shore Community Bank, Wilmette, where she assists clients with their banking needs. Olimpia is a Chicago native and lives in the Edison Park area.  We are very pleased to welcome Olimpia to our club!
PHF Members Recognized
We recognized three members as new multi-level Paul Harris Fellows.  This means that their accumulated contributions through EREY to The Rotary Foundation reached a new $1000 level this year. Terry Porter presented new PHF pins to Tim Frenzer, Jim Pockross and Ray Zeiss.

 Think About EREY

Last chance to donate this Rotary Year to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). It would be great if every member is able to contribute $100 this Rotary year. If you can contribute $100, that equates to only 27 cents per day or $1.92 per week.  But any contribution is welcomed.  Ray Z. or Terry P. will be able to tell each member how far away they are from their next Paul Harris Fellow award (PHF). Remember part of your contribution comes back to our Club to help fund our service programs. Ray Zeiss has indicated that there are several members who are very close to becoming a Paul Harris Fellow, or adding to their PHF status, with credits from our past EREY contributions. Donations will be matched for those within $500 of reaching the next PHF.

Rotary Day of Restoration
On Saturday, 23 Rotarians from several different Rotary Clubs (one from our club) gathered at the Miami Woods forest preserve.  We helped to pull out garlic mustard which is an invasive species that can proliferate to replace native plants.  It turned out to be a warm sunny day and a fun event, despite bringing home a couple of ticks.
