Program: John Huston, 1st “Unsupported” American Expedition to the North Pole
John, a native of Evanston, wilderness guide, oversees the Northwestern University Outdoor Program and is a motivational speaker. He and a partner trained for three years for the trek to the North Pole, by building strength and endurance pulling truck tires of up to 300lbs as they simulated cross country skiing.
They traveled the tundra for 58 days and ate up to 7,000 calories (including 1 stick of butter each) day. At times they fell behind schedule because the ice flows were breaking up and would erase their forward progress. But in the end, they made up time because of their perseverance.
Their tenets for this journey were:
* Commitment
* Preparation
* Believe in Success
* Adapt to Changes
Safety was a huge priority. 75% of trekkers fail in the first 2 weeks and give up the mental battle. John and his partner supported each other with patience, hard work, and positivity. They reached the North Pole 7 hours ahead of schedule!
