PROGRAM: Retired Army Colonel Jill Morgenthaler

Retired Army Colonel Jill Morgenthaler is an award-winning and international speaker who assists women and men in not only surviving but also thriving as leaders. Colonel Jill is a woman of many firsts. She was one of the first women to enter ROTC and to train as an equal with men. She was one of the first female company commander in the Army Security Agency Group Korea; she was the first woman battalion commander in the 88th Regional Support Command; and she was the first woman brigade commander in the 84th Division, commanding hundreds of Soldiers across six states. In Illinois, she was the first woman to lead homeland security. The US Army awarded her the Bronze Star in Iraq and the Legion of Merit for her outstanding leadership in Iraq and the Legion of Merit upon her retirement. Today Colonel Jill is the author of the forthcoming book: Hooah! Life Lessons from Colonel Jill. The colonel lives in Mount Prospect with her husband and one or two adult children, depending on the economy.
Here are key thoughts from Colonel Morgenthaler’s talk.
One must believe in yourself first before you can lead. “Hooah” is the "cry" of the Army, and the Colonel has developed a book around this shout.
H - Hands
Sometimes the leader has to do it.
Bosses have to be able to get in and do the work the employees do
Get out of your office. Walk around leadership is important.
O - Optimism
Start off the day on a positive note.
Whatever you send out to the universe comes back
O - Opportunity
Education is important.
Be the expert.
A - Ability
Fake it ‘til you make it.
Know what your talents are and what your employees’ talents are
Make sure your employees never get bored. What is their passion?
H - Heart
Understand you are the right person at the right place at the right time.
There are people who will try to knock you down.
Finally, here are 5 things to do if someone tries to crush your dreams.
1. Choose who goes on the journey with you.
2. You need cheerleaders who cheer you on and understand you
3. You just need to let go of some people who are “frenemies”. Do not hang with negativity.
4. Sing: If you don’t know me by now, you will never, never know me.”
5. I love you too much to argue.
