PROGRAM: Barry Miller – On Lyme’s Disease
Introduction (Roast) by Joyce Knauff and Gil Gilbert
Taught history 4 years; moved to Mnpls; 1982 graduated from Med School; purchased vet practice; 3 kids; married 27 years; 3 dogs named Maggie, Mattie, Molly. His full name is Irwin Barry (not Barrack) Miller. He has difficulty with directions. He faints at sight of human blood. Gil finishes by displaying his “Miller Time” tee-shirt.
Barry:
- Lymes Disease (LD) is a bacterial infection discovered in Connecticut in 1975. The cause remained a mystery until 1982. Scientific name of the bacteria is Borrelia burgdorferi.
- Transmitted only by certain ticks. It is not contagious from human to human. Ticks pick up the bacteria while feeding on infected animals such as deer or mice and pass it to humans and animals, such as dogs. Black-legged or Deer tick
- Different forms of disease – indications are the same, treatments are the same
- Found all over US but highly concentrated in Midwest and East
- 300,000 cases per year – partly due to lack of education
- Epidemic proportions locally and in Wisconsin during deer hunting season
- Tick bites cause a bulls-eye lesion that expands and may form a rash that will disappear in about a month
- If not treated, LD may cause increasing severe - fevers, muscle pain, joints, spinal chord, meningitis, Bell’s palsy
- Treatment: antibiotic
- Testing for LD is not always effective in part because it looks for IGM or IGG antibodies rather than the bacteria itself.
- You can find more info at:
- Prevention for people: contact doctor immediately after tick bite; use insect repellent with Deet; cover body with light-colored clothing (socks over pants)
- Prevention for dogs: vaccinate; apply a topical tick control;
- 10-20 percent can exhibit symptoms for months/years even after treated
