SHENANIGANS:
Margaret Wein had the club laughing at her jokes. Here's a sample:
- 1) 2 Texans are sitting on a plane from Dallas and an old Jewish man is sitting between them. The 1st Texan says – My name is Roger and I own 250,000 acres. I have 1,000 heads of cattle and they call my “The Jolly Roger.”
The 2nd Texan says – My name is John. I own 350,000 acres and have 5,000 heads of cattle and they call my place “Big Johns.”
They both looked down at the little man who says – My name is Irving and own only 300 acres.
Roger looks down at him and says – 300 acres? What do you raise?
Nothing says Irving.
Then John asks - Well then, what do you call it?
Downtown Dallas Irving casually states.
PROGRAM:
Ellen Young’s REMARKS FOR CLUB VISITS
December 3, 2014
In a recent edition of the New York Times, it was reported that the United Nations’ refugee agency announced that “the number of refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced people worldwide has, for the first time in the post-World War II era, exceeded 50 million people. We seem to have spent the entire summer listening to reports of one tragedy after another, with bad news coming at us from every direction.
Earlier in August, Prime Minister David Cameron urged Britons to extinguish the lights in their homes at 10 p.m. on Monday, August 4th to leave a lone light or candle burning by 11 p.m. the precise moment of the declaration of war on Germany.
As I consider commemorations of the past I am reminded of an essential reason why many of us become Rotarians. 100 years after the tragedy called “The Great War”, we are still struggling to find ways to get people of different faiths, economic backgrounds, political ideologies and ethnic backgrounds to live together in peace.
What’s going to be different during this coming year of Rotary Service? The district has been divided into 5 sectors – each with a team of volunteers who will bring leadership closer to the club level on matters of membership, public image, youth service, foundation, and polio eradication.
Throughout the rest of the year, sector leaders, along with the Assistant Governors will continue to share Rotary’s story with smaller groups of clubs and non-Rotarian community members in the individual sectors.
We’ve launched a piece called “Pecha Kucha” to inform churches, clubs, schools and other non-profits about Rotary’s humanitarian initiatives. The emphasis will be on “Kids Helping Kids”
Let’s continue in the coming year to “Light up Rotary” for everyone who needs help as we serve Rotary and our world community in the months ahead. Thank you.
